EPICS Helps Educators Bring Real-World STEM Learning to Students
While careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are projected to grow faster than others in the U.S., barriers remain for low-income communities, hindering students from pursuing STEM majors and careers. In historically marginalized communities, students often do not have in-school or out-of-school STEM learning opportunities.
Supported by an All Points North Foundation grant, Purdue Research Foundation’s Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) K-12 model helps close the gap on equitable access to STEM learning experiences. The grant will expand the nationally recognized program to middle schools in Indianapolis, Phoenix, and Baltimore. Currently, 17 states and Washington, D.C., have embraced EPICS, providing opportunities for 3,000 students and 120 teachers in community-engaged learning that not only meets Next Generation Science Standards but also integrates STEM lessons in the classroom and sparks student interest in engineering fields.
Housed within Purdue University’s College of Engineering, EPICS helps level the playing field by training teachers in human-centered design, an approach that encourages students to solve real-world challenges by considering the needs of the people, communities, and environments affected by the issue being addressed. The program provides free curriculum and builds technology and engineering skills to help students from under-resourced communities see themselves in STEM futures. Focused on motivating middle school students in engineering, computing, and technology, the program engages students through the design, development, deployment, and support of real-world community-driven projects.
The proven STEM model inspires and prepares students for future careers by immersion in STEM concepts that connect students with local non-profits to solve community-related problems.
Schools will identify community needs and opportunities, then seek partnerships for resources, expertise, and professional networks. The program fosters teacher-student, student-student, and student-community collaboration, with feedback that allows them to adjust and adapt to meet each school’s needs and inspire the next generation of innovators.
