Modern Classrooms Project
Empowering New York City’s Educators to Lead Modern, Student-Centered Classrooms
In classrooms around the country, teachers are grappling with how to meet the unique developmental needs of every student while delivering rigorous grade-level content to ensure they are on a trajectory for future success.
Founded in 2018 by two District of Columbia Public Schools educators, the Modern Classrooms Project (MCP) is reshaping not only how teachers teach but also how learners learn. MCP’s blended, self-paced, mastery-based instructional model empowers educators to create responsive classrooms. Short teacher-created video content enables students to learn at their own pace and affords teachers something they desperately need: time to work with students through targeted intervention and one-on-one or small group engagement.
Through a grant from All Points North Foundation, MCP will support over 90 public middle school teachers in New York City as they launch two newly mandated math curricula. Aligning the proven MCP method with the district’s curricula will reduce teacher prep time and help increase teacher wellness while ensuring that students receive high-quality personalized instruction. Middle school teachers will be trained on how the MCP model and math curricula work together to transform their classrooms into optimal learning environments. MCP’s coaching staff and experienced math teacher leaders will also provide year-round coaching to guide teachers through implementation.
To date, MCP has reached over 70,000 educators with its free online course and over 20,000 educators through the Virtual Mentorship Program. Collaborating with schools, school districts, and research partners has fostered not only success but also a sustainable model. MCP staff are confident that the targeted curriculum-embedded approach will lead to increased curriculum implementation quality, accelerated adoption of the MCP model, and ultimately, improved student outcomes and increased teacher retention.
