Teacher Leader Training Focuses on Instructional Rigor to Drive Student Gains in Math Readiness
Founded by teachers in 1997, education nonprofit TNTP is reimagining America’s public education system to ensure every student has access to life-changing opportunities, starting in the classroom. With a grant from All Points North Foundation, TNTP will deepen its GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program) Partnership with one of its highest-need middle schools.
Funding will provide high-touch support for Ann M. Enriquez-Garcia Middle School in rural Texas, which enrolls 519 students, largely Hispanic/Latinx who have been identified as at-risk of dropping out. Almost 92% are economically disadvantaged, and 67% are English learners. Teachers will foster a growth mindset for students and learn how acceleration with instructional rigor can improve student outcomes.
Building on previous momentum at the campus and the knowledge that powerful teaching is a critical component of a solid education for all students, TNTP will strengthen teacher and instructional leadership capacity with a focus on Algebra readiness in 8 grade. A cross-functional team of district and campus leaders, teachers, and stakeholders will develop a strategic vision for math instruction that embodies high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) and research-based practices to improve teaching for middle school students who themselves are grappling with challenges in their emotional, social, and academic development. TNTP’s initiative aligns with a broader state program encouraging districts to focus on mathematical academic success, paving the way to meet the benchmarks of high school and college readiness. Students who complete Algebra in 8th grade have the opportunity to opt for a high school math course sequence that leads to completion of advanced math and college-level prep courses in their junior and senior years.
To help close the opportunity gap, TNTP will collaborate with district leaders to improve access to four critical levers to student learning success: grade-appropriate assignments, strong instruction, deep engagement, and teachers with high expectations.
By aligning instructional practices with research-based strategies and HQIM, trained educators will increase confidence in delivering rigor and relevance to their lessons. Effective teaching will undoubtedly result in stronger outcomes for students ready to tackle a higher level of math as they prepare for their post-secondary pursuits.
